AMPK, the 'energy enzyme'
AMPK is the enzyme responsible for maximising available energy resources when times get tough, either through glucose and nutrient starvation or with increased physical exercise. Think of it like a metabolic master switch, when off it's busy building fat cells and storing glucose for later, but when switched on its using up those stored fat and sugar reserves to produce ATP energy. This is one of the main reasons why fasting and exercise are so beneficial for the body, AMPK senses that energy levels are low so tells the body to burn up existing fats and sugars with increased efficiency, improving cellular health. AMPK stands for AMP-activated protein kinase, meaning that when it senses increased AMP levels it switches on to help regulate energy intake and expenditure. By boosting AMPK with supplements such as Berberine and Alpha-Lipoic acid, the metabolism is encouraged to efficiently repair cells and eliminate metabolic waste and fats. As such AMPK is recognized as a key pathway for longevity and healthy aging.
Berberine
Berberine is a natural plant alkaloid found in Barberry Root, Golden Seal and Oregon Grape. It's action is very similar to Metformin, a prescription drug used to treat Type 2 diabetes, but its benefits extend beyond insulin and blood glucose regulation. An excellent cardiovascular tonic Berberine helps to correct arrhythmia of the heart and lowers blood pressure. It also supports gut health and as a natural antibiotic can help to eliminate harmful gut bacteria such as H. Pylori, E. Coli, Staphylococcus and Salmonella.

Taken as a supplement it can assist weight loss and speed up the metabolism of glucose into energy. Many other benefits are linked to ALA such as , improved digestion, neuro-protection from memory loss, reduction in nerve-pain, skin health and cholesterol management
